Church Langley SMBC

The Church Langley Bowls Club plays Short Mat Bowls in the Church Langley Community Centre. The Club was established in 1997 being formed by a group of friends who had a common interest in learning how to play bowls. The Club operates in a friendly atmosphere with the minimum of rules and regulation. Whilst adhering to the rules of the English Short Mat Bowling Association (ESMBA), the Club is not affiliated and is relatively uncompetitive. The Club does, however, maintain an internal competition for members that might be interested. All games are conducted in an air of friendly competition with good sportsmanship being the aim of each match.

The club meets twice each week, once on Tuesday 9.30 till 12.00 and again on Thursday 3.00 till 5.30. Most members arrive in advance of the opening times in order to help set up equipment and join in conversation with other Club members.

Flat-soled shoes are worn during play to protect the mats from wear and tear. Shoes are changed before games commence to ensure that dirt and other detritus is not deposited on the mats. Some new members prefer to play without shoes and take advantage of the spare woods that are readily available. This allows new members to commence play with minimum expenditure while they decide if Short Mat Bowls is going to be the game for them.

Fees are payable before each day’s play. Currently this amounts to £1.30 for the hire of the hall plus 20p for the Bowl’s Club funds. Other monies may be requested by the Social secretary, from those members wishing to attend the Christmas meal and other social engagements. There is no annual fee.

Light refreshments are provided during a half time break and members are asked to provide their own cup.

New members are always welcome.
